Outreach Strategies

These are the strategies that will help you spread the word and get your employees and colleagues on board. Use our interactive scorecard to evaluate your progress to date in this area and get linked to specific tools and resources to help you implement the recommended actions.

Create a "Green Team" 
Create an in-house "Green Team" explicitly responsible for managing all environmental initiatives, and that meets at least quarterly.
Measure your carbon footprint 
Use an online calculator to develop your greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. Set a reduction goal at least equal to the countywide goal. Develop a plan to meet the reduction goal. Monitor progress yearly, participate in county reporting, and adjust plan, if necessary.  
Attend a training session
Have 5% of your staff view a free EPA Energy Star webinar or host an in-office educational session for your employees.
Designate a "Green Week" 
Designate one week as "Green Week", where daily e-mails are sent to all staff identifying the impact (e.g. emission or waste reductions) of specific Green Business Challenge actions or other environmental initiatives.
Update staff with quarterly progress reports
Alert all staff as to your involvement in the Green Business Challenge, and provide quarterly electronic reports on the progress of in-house environmental initiatives.
Encourage other businesses to join the challenge 
Refer another business to take the Green Business Challenge.
